between the regular hockey season, clinics and off season practice we’ve been watching odin play hockey for 10 straight months. odin loves every minute of it ( he’s skating in the red socks in this picture ) but i can’t say i’m not going to enjoy taking a month or so off before the regular season starts up in october.
we’ve been thinking of seeing if odin would wear contacts for sports for awhile and even though his glasses drive him crazy, especially during hockey, he’s been reticent for any number of reasons. i guess a big part is that he’s been wearing glasses since he was a year old so it’s all he’s known. he finally agreed to give them a shot and we got a set right before vacation and i think we might have set a record for shortest time between getting the contacts and ripping a contact ( contact fell on the ground while he was trying to put it in and frida decided she’d come investigate the situation and ripped it with her paw ).
we just got another set after getting back from vacation and he’s been practicing putting them and taking them out. i think after he plays hockey once or twice there will be no going back to glasses at least on the rink. not sure what he’ll decide to do for off ice.
when i look into his eyes, i think of his ROP eye surgery and the the time we thought he had a detached retina and the fact that he really shouldn’t have good depth perception of field of vision ( complications of ROP surgery ) so it’s still pretty amazing to me that he’s getting contacts and playing hockey.
it all happened very fast. odin was jumping feet first off the dock with his cousins and landed hard on his feet in water that was shallower than he anticipated and his momentum carried him forward and he came down hard on his knees. i’m guessing he landed on a mussel shell that sliced such a deep gash.
so we went on an a trip to the local medical clinic and the doc ( small world – she graduated from UW madison and grew up in oregon, wisconsin! ) confirmed that he needed a few stitches ( side note, both of us were surprised at how painful the anesthetic shots were – ooouuuuccchhhh! ). it only very slowly dawned on us that this meant odin wouldn’t be able to get in the water for the rest of vacation 🙁
all things considered, it ended up being a minor injury but a good reminder to have a healthy respect around the lake. i’m glad he didn’t jump in head first.

stopping at the northbound kennebunk service plaza after entering maine to hang out with a moose is not a new tradition. odin getting some sort of double chocolate thing from starbucks is.
it’s not like we never eat fast food, but I love that odin prefers to eat the homemade steak Caesar salad we prepared for the trip and doesn’t even ask for fast food available at plaza.
we learned last year that when you have the chance to watch treehouse movie you really should take it because the chances go by fast what with crazy schedules, inclement weather and summer zooming right along. so tonight we watched big hero 6, with odin some buddies and their parents. and yes, we had homemade popcorn and movie theater candy because IT’S IN THE TREEHOUSE MOVIE THEATER RULE BOOK!
what a sweet, sweet movie. A++. highly recommended whether or not you have a treehouse deck and an 11 foot movie screen 🙂
