day 4199: a new year’s day hockey tournament!

day 4199: a new year’s day hockey tournament! I.

it’s become a tradition to spend new year’s day at a hockey tournament where teams are made up of players from around the region. it’s a great way for the kids to get to know other players and a perfect way to spend the first day of the new year. this year the pee wee tournament is hosted in black river falls which is about an hour away from our hometown.

odin’s team won the first game of the tournament, 2-4. a great start to 2016!

watching teams in between games about to dig into tourney fundraiser grilled steak and potatoes which we’ve learned is way better than you might expect to find in a hockey arena.

aaaand odin’s team won second game, 3-5! they’re leading tourney in wins & points. just one more game! 52 shots on goal!

no trophy, no awards – nothing but the the satisfaction of knowing they won the tournament. great job, team!

we’ll definitely be back next year.

after the games, with the crowds clearing out, odin finds a seat to watch the winter classic.

day 4195 – 359/365. finally! star wars: the force awakens!

day 4195 - 359/365. finally! star wars: the force awakens! I.

neither reserved sold out seats nor the threat of a 0.5” of freezing rain and 50mph winds could keep us from getting to see star wars: the force awakens in imax and 3D!

day 4195 - 359/365. finally! star wars: the force awakens! II.

the kids loved the movie and the adults love the movie! totally worth seeing again. pretty iconic experience overall. i’m thinking if your an 11 year old ( or older! ) the character rey in particular is going to stick with you for a long time.

my initial sense is that it’s probably better than “a new hope” and “return of the jedi” and on par with “the empire strikes back”. that said, i agree with pretty much every point in in this kottke.org summary of thoughts ( warning: spoilers! ), especially points 6 and 8.

day 4194 – 358/365. the good and bad of the fancy features we don’t have in small town movie theaters.

we tried to just walk in off the street to see star wars: the force awakens only to discover the theater recent started taking reservations for seats and all the good seats were sold out for the day. i didnt even know reserved seating was a thing that existed! at first, it was annoying to not be able to walk off the street and get seating, but i think knowing we can get in tomorrow with a group of six and not have to stress about where we will be sitting will be awesome.

so, we made our reservations for the next day and then tried out the new, fancy d-box seating that you can reserve for even more money. the seats move and vibrate with the action in the movie. odin thought it was AWESOME! i thought it was a distracting gimmick that felt like you were in a broken massage chair.

day 4192 – oh nothing, just odin riding a hoverboard for the first time ( with bonus lens flare ).

day 4192 - oh nothing, just odin riding a hoverboard for the first time ( with bonus lens flare ).

for christmas, odin’s cousins got self-balancing two-wheeled boards hoverboards that are all the rage. it took him about 2 minutes to master riding it.

it’s going to take me longer to get over my wondering if the swagway branded boards are are a fire hazard. there seems to be lots of confusion over which brands might or might not be a problem.
