day 3365: odin welcomes home our new incredibly cute malamute puppy!

day 3365: odin welcomes home our new incredibly cute malamute puppy! I.

last november some very generous Friends Of Odin ( FOO! ) bought raffle tickets, entered to win great prizes and helped odin get a new puppy ( the vast majority of the tickets were purchased by long time readers of snowdeal.org most of whom i’ve never met IRL and i am still touched your kindness and generosity. thank you! ). we knew then that we wanted to get another alaskan malamute, but we didn’t know it was going to take this long to bring one home!

but after one unsuccessful breeding attempt and a long 8 week wait, kris went to go pick her up from the breeder near green bay today. she called after getting her and told us she was a veeeeeery cute puppy.

OH!MY!GOSH! she was right!

day 3365: odin welcomes home our new incredibly cute malamute puppy! II.

within moments of jumping out of the car it was clear she and odin are going to be great friends. she went right to him, sat at his feet and looked up as if saying, “ok, i’m here finally let’s go on an adventure!”

odin leaned down and she unleashed a flood of kisses.

day 3365: odin welcomes home our new incredibly cute malamute puppy! III.

odin has A Way with All Animals, but i don’t think i’ve ever seen a puppy so quickly bond with a member of her new family. very fast friends. they will no doubt be inseparable soon.

odin took her for a quick walk around the block so she could get accustomed to the smells of the neighborhood before seeing our yard and the house. she was thirsty after a walk around the block! she’s has a super mellow, curious and affectionate temperment.

day 3365: odin welcomes home our new incredibly cute malamute puppy! IV.

and what about a name? in norse mythology odin had two wolf companions geri and freki and continuing in our tradition of giving malamutes names that nobody can pronounce we’re leaning towards naming her freki which is pronounced fray-ki with a bit of a trill. if that doesn’t grow on us odin also had two ravens huginn and muninn and muninn ( meaning “memory” ) is a close second.

i’m sure you’ll see many more accounts of Odin’s Adventures with Freki(?) in the coming weeks.

it is, of course, bittersweet that pushkin didn’t survive to see freki and died just four weeks before we brought her home. he would have done a fine job teaching the house rules.

day 3352: first screening in the treehouse movie theater!

First showing in the tree house movie theater!

a few weeks ago while i was hanging christmas tree lights for ambience i suddenly realized that i had built the treehouse deck perfectly to show movies on our house!

there was space for about an 11 foot screen. and as if by magic the “throwing distance” from the deck to the house is such that the it’s the perfect distance to project onto the space. so obviously this was something that HAD TO HAPPEN! SOON!

day 3352: first screening in the treehouse movie theater! II.

i quickly procured a projector and decided to test it out by playing star wars episode IV. i was just testing and i didn’t think it was going to look great without putting up a screen so i wasn’t even intending to watch the whole movie. but it looked so awesome we decided to sit outside and watch our first movie in the trees!

day 3352: first screening in the treehouse movie theater! III.

while you can see the lines of the siding, after a few minutes of watching you quickly didn’t notice them. that said, i have plans to build a screen which will make the experience even more excellent! it’s hard to see on the photos but resolution of the image is a.maz.ing! i hooked up the insanely affordable and great sounding cyber acoustics computer speakers we have in the house which made it even more like being in a theater, EXCEPT WE’RE IN THE TREES!

watching movies on the treehouse deck is, without a doubt, going to be a regular thing.

day 3351: odin (finally) asks me to teach him some skating tricks!

day 3351: odin (finally) asks me to teach him some skating tricks!

odin has had a skateboard for many years, and while he’s jumped on it from time to time it’s never really captured his attention the way his ripstik has, mostly i think because many of his friends and cousins have ripstiks.

he’s known that i used to skate a looooooooong time ago but hasn’t ever asked me to teach him to skate and i’m certainly not interested in pushing it on him. i figured someday he might ask and if he did i’d be happy to show him a thing or two.

recently he decided he wanted to order a pair of vans for back to school shoes. i thought it was curious, since he’s never shown an interest in wearing his poppi’s favorite brand of skating shoes ( yes, i still wear vans even though i haven’t skated in years. i like the brand and genuinely think they are some of the most comfortable and durable shoes around ). i wondered if there was something more to his choice and, sure enough, when they arrived he asked if i’d show him some basic moves and tricks.

much to my suprise, i jumped on his board ( my first time on a deck in well over a decade ) and showed him how to push off, tic-tac ( move the front of the board back and forth to gain momentum ), do a 180 shove-it a little ollie and a backside nose stall on the curb. i’m not sure who was more impressed that i didn’t hurt myself – him or me 🙂

i’ve actually been thinking about starting skating again for a long time. i used to love skating but stopped in my early 20s because of a bum knee from the cumulative toll from a car accident ( not wearing my seat belt! dumb! don’t do that! ) and skating injuries. in my early 30s when i started training for marathons i learned i could cure my bum knee with physical therapy. but then i stopped running marathons, gained a bunch of weight because i kept eating like i was still running marathons and started to feel like i was too old and out of shape to skate.

now that i’ve lost 110 pounds and am in better shape that i ever was in my 20s, i wonder about picking it up again in a low-key way. odin asking me to teach him a few things is all the excuse i need.

so who knows, maybe i will do boardslides while wearing sunglasses after dark once again. only this time, with odin.

day 3350: first day of third grade!

day 3350: first day of third grade!

i’m not sure odin could be more excited to go back to school!

he had a great first day. a sure sign that he’s in a waldorf school – he’s most excited about being able to work in his class knitting projects at home this year instead of feeling rushed to get them in class.

he’s not as excited about having his picture taken before school, hence the “fake smile” 🙂

day 3346: lessons on love and loyalty and letting go and, eventually, death.

day 3346: lessons on love and loyalty and letting go and, eventually, death.

when we got the blood results back a few days ago we knew we weren’t going to have much time with him. his vet said that telling when a dog was in pain is often difficult with his type of condition. even when they are in severe pain they’ll wag their tales and come when called and get excited to go for a walk ( even when they don’t have the stamina to walk far ). the best indication is when a dog stops doing the things they love to do.

we’ve known he’s been sick for the past 6 weeks, but very quickly over the past few weeks, pushkin has stopped doing the things he loved to do. he stopped eating anything except raw chicken thighs and even that was very slowly over the course of a day. he stopped sitting in his favorite chair. and most tellingly of all he stopped licking us. he’s always been an avid licker and notorious for sneaking in licks when you weren’t expecting it. “pushkin can’t control his licker” was familiar refrain around the house ( we always said it was because he was “grateful” for us rescuing him from the horrid abuse he suffered as a puppy ). but no more.

there’s lots that could be said about pushkin. pushkin was a great dog and a loving, constant companion. in probably 90% of the photos i’ve taken of odin over the past 5 years, pushkin is within 10 feet of the frame.

just one story about how kind and smart he was. never once did he try to eat or otherwise taunt our chickens. we told him when we first brought the chicks home that the chickens were not food AND HE UNDERSTOOD! he’d watch them run around in the yard and not give them a second thought. he’d even protect them like they were members of the family pack. he would give any cats that wandered into the yard a chase if he thought they were going to harm the chickens. he’d even come over and give me a furrowed brow if he wasn’t sure why i was laying in the grass taking pictures of them.

we did a few special things over the past week like going to the drive-in but the reality is that pushkin didn’t have much stamina or interest in doing much except laying near us in the house. we made our peace with the decision as it became clearer that it was the right thing to do. in the past few days he would even get up and walk away if we approached him, as if he was trying to tell us it was time.

we got up and made him a breakfast of bacon and odin and i took a last ride with him in the galaxie. typically, he would eagerly put his head out the window, but not this time. odin noticed that it was another thing that pushkin would normally do but didn’t do anymore.

“poppi, i’m sad, but i think it’s best for pushkin to put him to sleep. i dont want him to be in pain.”

“i think you’re right odin. i think you’re right.”

odin probably said it best. “poppi, i don’t understand. why did this happen to pushkin? he’s The Best and Most Kind Dog In The Whole World. it’s Just Not Right.”

after the ride, we came home made pushkin a breakfast of bacon and shortly after took him to the vet and put him to sleep.

odin has learned a lot of lessons this week. pets teach us about love and loyalty and letting go and, eventually, death. and most importantly of all to enjoy the time you spend with the ones you cherish on this planet because you never really know how much you have.

day 3314: on sharing the death star.

day 3314: on sharing the death star.

odin looooooves legos so when a veeeeery generous relative ( possibly too generous 🙂 gave him a death star for his birthday he was, unsurprisingly, quite a happy boy. it says if for ages 14 and up but odin has advanced lego skills and put together the 3,803 pieces in marathon sessions over a few days.

we wondered if it could be cause for conflict or jealousy amongst his friends who might covet such an extravagance. nope. friends come over and play for hours and discuss and that aspect fo the model and how faithful a replica it is to the death star in the star wars movies.

he’s even voluntarily loaned it out so friends who don’t have it can enjoy it from the comfort of their own homes, which is an excellent example of odin’s kindness and generosity.

i’m pretty sure when i was nine i wouldn’t have loaned it out to my friends and i’d probably have taunted them for not having it.

day 3341: bedtime stories by the light of the ipad on the treehouse deck.

day 3341: bedtime stories by the light of the ipad on the treehouse deck.

we didn’t end up camping in the trees last night. the threat of early morning storms brought us down the trees. boo! but the best part about it being in our backyard is that we can spend the night in the trees any ol’ night 🙂 there’s still a threat of thunderstorms tonight and the crickets are loud as all get out, so tonight might just be stories before bedtime.

kris is to odin. if you look closely you can see the light of the ipad. our library has an app that lets you check out books. it’s awesome.
