day 3229: lounging about with the chickenpox, imagining Super Awesome treehouse designs.

while i fiddle around on the deck, odin lounges about with the chickenpox, swinging in a hammock imagining all the Super Awesome things we might be able to design into The World’s Most Awesome Treehouse(s).

maybe a slide ( or water slide?! ) that take a steep dive off the deck and a few twists and turns on the way down. or maybe a climbing wall up one side with monkey bars along the bottom of the deck to a fireman’s pole that you slide down. certainly a hammock 15 feet up on the trees is necessary!

i have no idea how many of his crazy ideas we’ll build but i do love that he has crazy ideas and usually has a credible plan in his mind for how to build them.

day 3175: the annual kids versus parents hockey game!

day 3175: the annual kids versus parents hockey game! I.

it’s the end of another hockey season, which means it’s time for the annual kids versus parents hockey game!

which is really an opportunity for the kids to skate circles around the parents while trying not to crush us too badly. and an opportunity for the parents to try not to crush the kids, literally 🙂

i couldn’t help sneaking over to the kids bench for a photo op with odin.

day 3175: the annual kids versus parents hockey game! II.

the parents didn’t do too badly against the kids. we sort-of held out for two periods of the game and kept the score to within a few goals but the kids pulled away in the last period and won 12 to 4. sigh.

but i did score a goal, didn’t fall down, and even got an honest steal away from my own son! whooohoooo! and, odin scored three goals!

a fun time was had by all. i can’t believe another season has come and gone. maybe next year we’ll beat the kids, but i’m not going to place any bets.

the day i met patricia bragg and learned she was a preemie!

the day i met patricia bragg and learned she was a preemie! I.

most years around this time of year i get to go to an industry convention in lovely anaheim, california and most years i see patricia bragg of bragg liquid aminos fame walking and talking with folks. she’s remarkably witty and spry for her 83 years of age.

odin loves braggs on his rice so i thought this year it would be fun to talk and take a picture with her so i could show him who i get to hang out with while i’m out of town 🙂

the day i met patricia bragg and learned she was a preemie! II.

i casually mentioned that i had a son, odin, who was born 16 weeks early and was really small but was now a strong, healthy kid, that he really, really loved braggs and rice and that he’d be super happy if i had my picture taken with her because he would recognize her from her picture on the bottle. she got very excited and told me that she was born early 83 years ago, only weighed two pounds and was in the hospital for months! we talked for a bit about prematurity – maybe for a little longer than the other people waiting to talk with her would have liked.

she’s a really nice lady, i’m glad i took the time to stop and chat!

the lies we tell ourselves while running with a chest cold.

the lies we tell ourselves while running with a chest cold.

“oh, a -5°F wind chill isn’t really that cold. and it’s only 4 miles. i mean, the cold will agitate my chest in a good way and help, you know, clear the gunk out.”

uh, huh. the icicle’s hanging from my eyelashes produced from my breath venting out the face mask are messing with the “it’s good for you” narrative. that said, it did clear things out. briefly. sort-of.

i voted! and my earliest presidential election memory.

i voted! and my earliest presidential election memory.

decisions, decisions.

the nice ladies at the volunteer booth said they had an “unheard of” number of absentee ballots. not sure what that means.

odin has been really interested in this election, asking me why i didn’t vote early ( i love that he doesn’t ask why you vote, or where you vote or when you vote, but why i haven’t voted early! ) and he even apparently dreamed about carrying an flag on election day.

i realized this morning that my earliest presidential election memory is of watching the 1980 election returns on television with my grandparents when i was odin’s age.

i think i remember the superman movie was playing on hbo and was sort-of annoyed that we had to keep flipping between stations to watch the boring old election.

i’m sure someone will probably fact check my memory and tell me that i wasn’t at my grandparent’s house or that superman wasn’t broadcast on hbo in 1980, but that’s my memory and i’m sticking to it!

i should note that there is some controversy over photographing your vote. as far as i know ( though ianal ) wisconsin state law does not expressly prohibit recording inside the polling place and any photo of an unmarked ballot where not prohibited should be legal.

day 3042: the 2012 halloween crew!

day 3042: the 2012 halloween crew! I.

the 2012 halloween crew getting ready for some tricking or treating!

can you spot odin?

day 3042: the 2012 halloween crew! II.

oh, o.k. i’ll make it a little easier for you. odin and i were dressed-up as matching, well, i’m not quite sure what we dressed-up as. maybe ringwraiths?

i cobbled the costume together a few years ago from this and that and have discovered it’s very disconcerting to young and old alike, possibly because i’m taller than your average joe and people can’t see my face. it’s big fun to sneak up next to unsuspecting trick-or-treaters and just loom over them without saying a word.

odin so enjoyed the effect that he decided he wanted to dress up like his poppi this year 🙂
