day 3250: empirically testing the physics of freefall and drag.

day 3250: empirically testing the physics of freefall and drag. I.

“poppi. can i go up on the flat roof and throw down this parachute i made? i want to test how many marbles i put in cup before it doesn’t float anymore.”

of course! because even if he doesn’t know he’s empirically testing the physics of free fall and drag with parachutes, i can still understand the fun of standing on the edge of a roof and throwing stuff off the edge.

and, amusingly, i remember being his very age and wondering how many garbage bags i would have to put together to safely carry me down from the top of a tree.

it floats!

he could put a few marbles in the cup before it became too heavy for the size of the parachute. it’ll be interesting to see if he figures out how to plot various surface areas against max weight carried.

i can *finally* scratch “build cedar window boxes” off the to-do list.

i can *finally* scratch "build cedar window boxes" off the to-do list.

building two 7 foot long cedar window boxes isn’t really all that hard, but like most projects it’s never going to get done unless i set aside the time to actually do it! so, this year i made the perennial to-do item on my list a mother’s day gift for kris so i’d be sure to get it done 🙂

they are simple boxes made similar to what’s shown in this martha stewart cedar window box how-to. i used three 1″x10″ cedar boards with 2 1″x1″ cedar “cleats”, which hold the front and back and sides, drilled and glued to the bottom board. i trimmed the bottom board to 8″ wide so i could flare out the front of the box to give it a little more style that a simple rectangle.

i suppose i could fancy them up with some trim at some point.

still life of odin’s maker table.

still life of odin's maker table.

a few years ago we turned a room in our house into a “maker room”. i suppose in days gone by it might have been called a craft room, but hey, we love the maker culture, hence its name.

as is typical with kids, odin just assumes that everyone has a subscription to make magazine and an entire room dedicated to creating stuff. it amuses us greatly that odin will matter-of-factly tell people that he was doing this or that in “the maker room”. some folks furrow their brows and not have a clue what he’s talking about, but a good number of people are familiar with the emerging maker culture which i guess shouldn’t be so suprising when even the white house is blogging about maker faires and founders of the movement are being honored as whitehouse champions of change.

in any case, we make stuff on a nice, big 7 foot table ( appropriately, it’s made from a door ) and it’s usually as messy as you’d expect a making table to be especially when odin is in the middle of tinkering on a few projects.

i went in the room to find something and loved this “still life” of one small portion of the table with a copy of “How to Do Nothing with Nobody All Alone by Yourself” ( first published in 1958! ) and “The Dangerous Book for Boys”, a sheathed knife, an x-acto knife, a cutting mat, bits of paper from various pop-up projects, a pile rubber bands, batteries, , yarn, knitting needles, crochet needles, a crochet project, copper tubing first used to study eddy current braking and now used for who-knows-what and, of course a copy of the latest issue of usa hockey magazine.

day 3146: odin's handmade pop-up valentine's day cards. I.

odin has been experimenting with making pop-up paperworks. he’s totally fascinated with how to make three-dimensional creations so we got a few books and read some tutorials online and he decided to put his skills to work and came up with a simple but beautiful design for valentine’s day cards for his classmates.

he wanted a card that would pop-up a heart when opened and came up with the two layer design all by himself. and he certainly didn’t inherit my formidable power of procrastination because he came up with a plan to complete all the cards well ahead of valentine’s day!

here’s a closer-up look of the design of the heart. that’s some pretty precise x-acto knife work!

day 2651: A Maker in the making.

day 2651: A Maker in the making.

when i was a young lad i was fortunate enough to grow up with a grandfather who was a tinkerer and i have many fond memories of strolling past his workbench with various things mechanical and electronic in various states of repair. he taught me the simple lesson that it was possible to take things apart and fix them and occasionally make them better, faster and stronger. this led to my notorious tendency to Take Things Apart and, later, wandering the aisles of radioshack contemplating what i could use to mod my “101 electronics” kit and what i could do if i got my hands on a heathkit HERO.

nowadays there’s a whole maker subculture and make magazine for the young and young at heart who enjoy Making Things which, i imagine, would make my grandfather smile and i’ve been slowly introducing odin to the idea that he can Do. Make. Create.

in that spirit we gave odin a few syma s107 rc helicopters which can be had for cheap on amazon. their cheapness combined with the availability of replacement parts and the ability to easily take them apart has created the conditions necessary for a variety of s107 helicopter mods which i thought would be fun to explore.

but before we could get to modding them, sure enough, we broke the rotors and balance bars on two of them after heavy use and many crashes while learning fly them around the house.

so i ordered some parts and we set about figuring how take them apart and put them together again.

i have to say, it was great fun working together with odin to figure out how to take them apart and hear him say, “dude, no, i think we just need to take out these these screws to fix it.”

of course, he was right, and in short order we were back to flying.

The Compleat De-Pinkification.

The Compleat De-Pinkification. I.

YOU GUYS, IT’S NOT PINK AND IT’S DONE!

now, if only someone would buy and fix up the dilapidated victorian next door that you can see through the window which is in foreclosure.

yes, the windows still need some work. BUT STILL!

The Compleat De-Pinkification. II.

look at that – NO HOLE!

and i think you have to look pretty darned close to detect the patch.

so, so, so happy to be done with the this project.
