281/365. people ( and volcano ) watching on the vegas strip.

never been to vegas before. i don’t gamble, so i guess i’ll fill my time people watching on the strip. hey, there’s a “volcano” in front of in front of the mirage hotel. i think the volcano is a mirage thing, but treasure island hotel is in the background of this photo. maybe there’s some obvious relationship between the mirage and a fake volcano that i’m not getting?

it’s not even 10 local time and I think many people are not pacing themselves.

280/365. pondering what the galaxie ( 500 ) says about me.

280/365. pondering what the galaxie ( 500 ) says about me.

today i had an exchange with someone while i was out in the old ford ( she turned 50 years old this year! ) which amuses me because they could not that know i’ve had the exact same exchange countless times over the past 13 years.

them: “you know, i really like your car.”

me: “oh, hey, thanks.”

them: “it’s soooooooo, you.”

me: “uh, thanks. i think that’s a compliment.”

them: “oh, it is.”

still, after all these years, i’m not quite sure exactly what they mean. i know it’s a compliment of some sort, i’m just not sure what sort it is 🙂

nobody ever says, “you know i really like your cool car. it’s sooooooo, you.” that’d be easy to interpret ( and even easier to dismiss as untrue ). i’m probably reading too much into it, but i get the impression from the repeated exchange that the galaxie says something about me that i don’t understand.

i can’t believe odin is about to start his 8th hockey season. i remember very clearly thinking as we were trying out different sports when he was three years old, “oh, the local ‘learn to skate’ program will be a fun way to learn a new skill. he might stick with it for a year or two. probably won’t last.”

boy was i wrong.

276/365. literally as much fun as a root canal.

276/365. literally as much fun as a root canal.

i have one cavity in my whole mouth and it’s a doozy. i got it when i was something like 7 or 8 years old after i became convinced i couldn’t get cavities and stopped brushing my teeth and lied to my mom whenever asked. the end result of that fantasy was a mouthful of cavities, but – hurray – all were baby teeth except this one molar. so i eventually got fresh, new teeth and a great early lesson in the importance of good dental hygiene.

the tooth has given me all sort of problems over the years. i think another cavity got under the filling which fell out, then i had to have a crown and then, for reasons i can’t recall, a second crown. more than one dentist over the years has told me i would eventually need a root canal, but i was still surprised after my last dentist visit to find the time was now since i haven’t had any pain or tooth sensitivity. in hindsight i now know the slight sensitive sinus was not actually due to allergies but an abscess infection. yuck.

so i got scheduled for endodontic therapy and here you can see three endodontic cleaning files in the root canals. as it turns out the worst part of the root canal is the painful shot of local anesthetic at the beginning. the sound and smell of the drilling and the sound and feeling of the filing was more disconcerting than painful.

oh, and I AM NOT GOING TO GOOGLE THE LIKELIHOOD OF A ABSCESS INFECTION SPREADING TO THE BRAIN. NOOOOOOOPE.

275/365. odin ( and us ) loved The Martian!

275/365. odin ( and us ) loved The Martian!

i haven’t read the book ( yet! ) but was very aware of the scientific accuracy ( except the most crucial part of the opening scene! ) in it and had a hunch it might be perfect movie for odin who is really developing an interest in the geek dad review, i was convinced odin could handle the movie so we went today AND HOLY COW IT WAS AWESOME! odin was completely engaged the entire time, not just in the thrills but in the science. british physicist brian cox sure nailed it in the when he said, “The Martian is the best advert for a career in engineering I’ve ever seen.”

who knows maybe someday odin will look back and remember the movie as seminal event in his interest in science, technology, engineering and math. and if not, he’ll always have a fun memory of a great movie.

having said all that, i do think the movie poster sells the film short.
