day 2238: in search of jasper.

south and east of the bad little falls in machias, you’ll find jasper beach in machiasport, maine.

of course, if you’re visiting jasper beach, you might rightly expect to find some jasper, but it occurred to us that none of us could identify jasper if it hit us on the head. which, i think, is the same reaction we had the last time we went to the beach. but, hey, it’s still a grand time looking for coole rocks even if they aren’t jasper. a grand time, that is, once you get past the fact that the ocean is take-your-breath-away freezing even in august. and the stone beach can be a little rough on tender feet 🙂

it seems that odin has inherited our humble love of rocks and, at least for now, enjoys strolls along rocky coastlines looking for Just The Right One.

you can find all sort of neat rocks, but which are jasper? well, it turns out, NONE! that’s right, according to the maine geological survey the red rocks on the beach are a volcanic rock called rhyolite and not actually jasper:

“Although Jasper Beach is named after the red volcanic stone that is common on the beach, that rock is not truly jasper. Jasper is a form of silica that is enriched in iron, whereas the red stone on Jasper Beach is a fine-grained volcanic rock called rhyolite. Its attractive appearance is also due to the polished surface formed by constant abrasion against sand grains.”

so, these fine specimens certainly aren’t jasper. or even rhyolite, but they’re still pretty neat ( bonus points will be awarded for helping me identify the rocks ).

odin, switching feet while balancing on a wet, slippery rock as the waves come and go. what could possibly go wrong ( thankfully, nothing, this time )!

day 2236: wherein i end the day with a big plate of clams.

ed: this is also the day i realized i probably wouldn’t rely on my crappy loaner cell phone’s camera to document the trip.

odin helps pack up after our night in greenfield, massachusetts where we collapsed after 13 hours of driving.

at last, we’re finally on last leg of the trip to maine!

i’m sure the folks in cars around us wondering why we were all very excited to see pushkin gallery as we drove through greenfield, massachusetts. we all miss our pushkin though i doubt the feeling is mutual since he’s staying with a dog sitter who has 3 other dogs!

after 1,700 miles of driving, we finally arrived in machias, maine and the first order of business? a big plate of clams from helen’s restaurant. while we wait, odin enjoys a maine root sarsaparilla root beer.

finally, the clams arrived! mmm mmmm molluscs!

strangely, i still can’t get odin to try the delicious molluscs steamed to perfection.

day 2228: odin’s tests a new “old maid” strategy.

odin and i were playing a round of old maid ( which i had no idea evolved from an ancient gambling game in which the loser pays for the drinks ) and i noticed a flash of devilishness cross his face as he not-so-subtly arranged the cards in a not-so-subtle attempt to influence my selection of cards from his hand.

odin, after a few rounds of watching me pass up on the extended card, grew puzzled. “poppi, why aren’t you taking this card.”

“which card?”

“this card, you know, this one.” ( presumably the “old maid” card that you don’t want to get left with at the end of the game )

“oh, i don’t know, i think i don’t want that one.”

“oooooh, yeeeeesssss, you dooooooooo.”

while it’s cute to watch him push the boundaries of the rules, i think we need to work on his poker face.

day 2219: how to win friends & influence chickens

why haven’t i taken more pictures of The Girls over the past 12 weeks? because it’s hard! they’re skittish and Highly Suspect of The Big Man With The Camera! i have come to believe that my nascent career poultry portraiture will never happen; i think the beautiful calendar hens must be stuffed or sedated. how else can you get them to sit still for 30 seconds?

hi. ho.

perhaps i should learn a thing or two from odin, since he’s figured out that The Girls seem quite approacheable if you come bearing gifts of food.

day 2213: Odin the Butterfly Whisperer.

odin received some painted lady butterfly caterpillars from insect lore for his birthday and we’ve been watching them make their chrysalids and patiently waited for them to emerge transformed.

we just missed them emerging from their cocoons but caught them soon after stretching out and drying off their new wings.

today was the day to let them go along their merry way. some flew right off, but one in particular didn’t seem to want to leave her caretaker and seemed to rather enjoy hanging out with The One Who Fed Her Nectar.

fun painted lady facts – she breathes through her abdomen, tastes with her feet and has 10,000 eyes!
