the 25th anniversary of ferris bueller’s day off

on the 25th anniversary of ferris bueller’s day off ( seriously, it’s not on netflix instant?! ) i present two different visions for a sequel. the first the first 12 pages of ‘ferris bueller’ sequel script where he’s made a small fortune with his personal motivation program and the comedy short ferris bueller’s last day off. anyone think either is funny? bueller? bueller?

update: as of february 1st 2013 it’s now on netflix instant!

the site for The World's Most Awesome Treehouse(s)?

is it a coincidence that after completing an Electrified Tinkering Space with Power Tools odin has asked me, ever so kindly, if we could build a Tree House together?

he has a vision of building three tree houses in The Big Spruces in our backyard ( one of which is already home to the most super awesomest tree swing. EVAR! which has served us well over the years ) connected via rope bridges and possibly a zip line from the house.

i like his style. how could i possibly say no?

after building the sauna and chicken coop, i think i have the skills to make it happen.

on virtual and real worlds colliding.

kris was attending a community function today with odin and ran into someone new to town who had started reading the website before they moved here. this has happened so many times over the years that i’ve lost count, and really it’s not that surprising given how natural it is for people nowadays to google the area before making a move and run across Odin’s Adventures and Other Things. some people find the whole thing just a bit weird, but i’ve always enjoyed meeting people through the website and hearing how they can relate to this or that Adventure.

i must admit thoug, i’ve always been much more amused to meet the smaller group of people who were reading the site before we moved to lovely southwest wisconsin – one of whom even had a young child named odin:

You may not believe this, but our son Odin West Rhode is the one that moved away from Viroqua. I’m floored! I found your photos just after our boy was born 5/15/06, and for peet’s sake, what’s the odds of you moving to Viroqua.

amusingly, i later borrowed their jigsaw they left behind with a mutual friend and broke it while building the coop for The Girls.

’tis truly a small world after all.

on electrification, power tools and a space to call my own. I.

running power to the garage which sits about 100′ away from the house has been a project two years in the making ( literally! two years! i almost can’t believe the timestamp on the “being manly on a sunday afternoon” ) and it finally came to fruition when i spent the time to put in an electrical box and breaker and whatnot this afternoon.

when i flipped the switch on the light fixture ( after getting over the inevitable surprise that nothing exploded or shorted out ) the reality really sunk in.

i have POWER IN THE GARAGE! and space to plug in a radio and power tools like the new-to-me 10″ radial arm saw that just happened to show up on a buy-sell-trade list for a Real Affordable Price that i couldn’t pass up. it’s like The Universe KNEW!.

it’s the dawn of a whole new age of tinkering and making.

perhaps unsurprisingly, after spending two hours in the newly electrified space, it became clear that i am in need of a mini fridge. and more power tools.

after playing around with the radial arm saw ( cutting down a bunch of odd-and-ends lumber for kindling for sauna ), i have a healthy fear of its power to take off digits and whole limbs. and it can really crank out the saw dust.

is that little round pipe thingy attached to the blade guard supposed to have a bag attached to catch sawdust? i rigged a plastic bag to it and it didn’t collect any dust at all.

day 2534: A Comic And Thai Adventure in madison.

day 2534: A Comic And Thai Adventure in madison. I.

and so, looking for an adventure ( and needing to do some shopping in A Big City ), we trekked to madison. we thought it would be fun to have lunch somewhere that served cuisine a bit more exotic than the typical fare to be round in rural southwest wisconsin and not knowing the madison restaurant scene nearly as well as i should, i put out a call on the social intertubes for a thai food recommendation.

bahn thai received the most number of votes so we decided to give it a try and were pleasantly surprised to see that it was next door to westfield comics which gave us the perfect opportunity to introduce odin to the wonders of a Comic Book Store. not having been in a comics shop in A Very Long Time, i was quickly reminded that the age appropriate pickings for an almost seven year old are slim ( thankfully odin didn’t stumble upon the new issue of heavy metal ), but we had a great time sitting on the floor and flipping through what selection they did have.

odin eventually settled on a copy of a batman comic which made for a great way to pass the time while we waited for our food after we meandered over to the restaurant ( as an aside, i think odin could develop a great love of comics and we’re looking for recommendations – some folks have already recommended the muppet show comic book and the secret science alliance ).

the food arrived quickly and bahn thai served good, but not great fare. the pork pad thai was a little sweet for my taste, but the fried rice and chicken satay were excellent. definitely worth more trips to explore the menu.

sa-bai got the second most number of votes on email, fb and twitter. vietenne palace and one for sala thai both got votes and look interesting from the yelp reviews. so we have plenty of thai options the next time we visit madison!

we’re certainly looking forward to hitting “madtown” more often. i can’t believe we’ve only visited a few times over the past few years.
