day 3048: first snowfall of the season!

day 3048: first snowfall of the season!

oh, to be eight again and thoroughly and entirely excited about the first snowfall of the season and all the possibilities it heralds for cross country skiing, building igloos, sledding and, of course, making perfect snowballs.

although it was a light snow with little accumulation that didn’t stay long, odin determined that it was awesome snowball snow.

fun fact, four years ago on election day it was 75°F and we were taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather by pouring cement for our sauna. later that same day odin was pressing his four year old hands in the cement!

the view from my desk on a fine wisconsin spring day.

normally, i have a serene vista over several miles of the 8,500 acre kickapoo valley reserve. today, not so much, with a snowstorm blowing through on april 19th!

after all was said and done we didn’t get as much snow as i’ve seen in the past around this time of year, but it sure looked mighty impressive ( although this might still be the The Last Snowman of 2011 since odin is now visiting grandparents in da UP ).

oh, yeah. and, yes, i do know and appreciate that i have a mighty nice view from my desk at organic valley hq 🙂

day 2478: The Last Snowman of 2011?

day 2478: The Last Snowman of 2011?

when old man winter brings a few inches of the white stuff in mid-april we snowdeals don’t complain! oh, no! we make lemonade from lemons ( to mix a metaphor, badly ) and build a snowman!

one wonders, though, if this is the last the old man has in store for us. i recall four years ago he stopped by and dropped 8 inches on us in mid-april.

elder cheeseheads will tell you that you’re ill-advised to put the ice scraper away until june.

day 2478: swimming lessons, snow and singing johnny cash.

day 2478: swimming lessons, snow and singing johnny cash.

whether you’re almost seven or thirty seven(ish), there are few things more fun than finishing up swimming lessons to find that it’s still snowing in a freak mid-april storm and that there’s enough snow on the ground to build a snowman when you get home.

and between then and now on the trip home you and a friend ( and your poppi ) have time to sing all the songs in the johnny cash children’s album while it’s cranked up to 11!

day 2345: six years of parenting pays off with the first snow of the season.

we got our first good snow fall of the season last night with a 4 or so inches covering the ground, which means, of course, that it’s time to get out the shovels and The Community Snow Blower to clear out the driveway and sidewalk and make paths to the chicken coop and sauna.

never one to be shy of The Elements, odin has been helping me shovel snow for years with great determination and gusto even if he hasn’t been able to move great amounts of snow. and last year he even helped me on occasion operate the snow blower, though it was a bit of an effort for his five year old muscles to lug it around for extended periods of time.

but now he’s almost six and a half years old and apparently all the training has paid off. this morning he was excitedly shoveling snow off the front walk and sidewalks before i even finished my first cup of coffee. and as if that wasn’t enough work, he told me he reeeeaaaaalllllyyy wanted to snow blow the entire driveway – all 100 feet of it.

and, sure enough, he happily did just that for. over. two. hours.

i hope he remembers his zeal for snow removal when he’s a teenager 🙂
