the long lost pasture butter cheesecake recipe finally published.

the long lost pasture butter cheesecake recipe finally published.

a casualty of time, i never got around to properly blogging the recipe for my pasture butter cheesecake but the fine folks who put together organic valley’s rootstock publication did use one of the photos i took and published the recipe in the latest issue along with my “award-winning” double chocolate hazelnut ice cream ( using another photo i took for a recipe i never blogged. gah, i need more time in the day! ).

if you can’t find a rootstock near you feel free to ask your local magazine shop, bookstore, or grocery to order it 🙂

i think you should be able to grab the full sized image for easier reading here.

maybe someday i’ll get around to blogging the entire process of making the cheesecake…

on drilling a hole through a tree

i’m getting close to starting to build The World’s Most Awesome Treehouse(s). after talking with some builders, i’ve decided to drill a hole straight through the trees, run threaded rod through the hole and bolt the tree house supports to the threaded rod ( i’ll have more on the plans soon ).

but how do i drill a hole through a 24 inch tree? our local hardware store only has a 15″ auger bit. i found 3/4″ x 17″ auger bit and an 3/4″ x 18″ bit but nothing close to 24 inches.

can i make a clean, straight hole with this 54″ long cable bit?

update: a friend pointed me to this 3/4″ x 24″ auger bit which might do the trick although it’s a bit spendy.

14 miles! and a big ol’ glass of organic valley chocolate milk.

14 miles! and a big ol' glass of organic valley chocolate milk.

i ran 14 miles that felt pretty good for the most part ( and 36 for the week ) though i have to admit thinking about the nice big glass of organic valley chocolate milk waiting for me at the end was about the only thing that pulled me through the last two miles 🙂

there’s lots of research supporting benefits of chocolate milk as an exercise recovery drink and some of the most research was specifically done on runners and evaluated protein turnover, muscle glycogen, and performance during recovery:

“The effects of consumption of MILK after endurance exercise on [ muscle protein fractional synthetic rate ] FSR, signaling molecules of skeletal muscle protein turnover, leucine kinetics, and performance measures suggest unique benefits of milk compared with a CHO-only beverage.”

also, this was the first run where i felt like consuming some “goo” would probably do me some good. i had a 90% organic mocha clif shot ( WITH 50MG OF CAFFEINE! ) and i must admit that it was pretty good. i don’t think they existed 10 years ago when i was training for marathons because i have the worst memories of chocking down nasty non-organic carb goos that would make me gag. so happy i don’t have to deal with that anymore. and they’re remarkably affordable on amazon.

the bats, man!

i’m pretty sure the bat i chased down last night flying around our house – the fifth bat in the house this week – until he tired and then snatched with my (gloved) hand looked at me like i was crazy as i tossed him out the front door and told him to not come back because he wouldn’t like me when i was angry.

now that i think of it, maybe i should tag the next one to see if it’s the same one returning over and over again. unlikely, but i suppose not impossible.

i can’t figure out how they are getting in, or why the sudden influx after five years of being bat free.
