nyt: Viewfinder: Hogpen Hill Farm

huh, who knew edward tufte has a farm with 234-acres of landscape sculpture fields that he opens to the public once a year. i’d love to make a trip. and i also love the article’s description of tufte, “[he] is also known as a genius of data visualization, professor emeritus of political science, statistics, and computer science at Yale, an author of books on information design, and a hater of PowerPoint.

one the one hand taken on its own, the new, local library is an example of the conservative modernism movement with its focus on functionality ( lots of windows to let light in and out ) and rectilinear forms ( straight lines and angular corners ). on the other hand, sitting just off the historic downtown district it looks like a hypermodernist spaceship from the future.

for as long as i can remember, odin’s favorite meal has been beans and rice and cheese and kale. and i think it’s not just because it’s covered in three types of yummy dairy ( cheese, sour cream and butter ). and it’s certainly not because of its association with The Dog Food Burrito Incident 🙂

rather, i think it shows the power of early experiences of a good meal combined with fond memories of friends, as it was a frequent lunch dish at the local walforf school. all the kids loved the hot meal made from scratch with organic ingredients by Jim The Cook.

don’t get me wrong, mac and cheese and pizza are still on his top five list but i think his love of beans and rice and cheese and kale with last a long time.

sometimes it strikes me how odd it is that we have domesticated dinosaur descendants in our backyard that turn house food scraps into delicious domesticated dinosaur descendant eggs. the very same eggs that helped them survive a mass extinction event. and that as a species they’re evolving 15 times faster than expected.

some people think chickens are not so smart. but maybe they’re just watching and waiting us out while they get fitter, faster. knowing they can survive.
