i'm happy to report that my weekly updates are almost getting mundane. i finished the week with a solid 11 mile run. the whole week felt strong with no real problems and i'm feeling more confident than ever. my biggest problem so far seems to be still not having a good sense for "good" and "bad" pain. i guess injury tends to do that to you, making you pensive and doubting. my best indicator appears to be the fact that i'm not taking any ibuprofin after runs, although i do need to keep up with a few of the exercises that my physical therapist gave me.

next week, i'll keep the weekday runs the same and add a mile to the long run for a total of 12 miles.

interesting. jeff veen discovered a use for his treo during the motorola marathon:

"So as Leslie ran, I cruised around the route on a borrowed vintage Schwinn with my Treo in my pocket. I was looking to meet up with her just after the halfway point, and ride along as support for a while. I pulled up by W's old house, checked the Web page, and saw that she'd be coming by in about 15 minutes. I grabbed a cup of coffee, waited a bit, and sure enough, there she was. I pedaled along side her for about an hour, giving her exact split times every time we passed a sensor, calculating her pace as we progressed, so she could set her tempo accordingly."

this is all the more interesting because despite the fact that i'm a motorola employee i had no idea there was a motorola marathon. maybe i should do a better job coordinating business trips. i'm looking for dorky things to do during the flying pig. maybe i'll snag a camera phone and moblog the marathon. i wonder how the photos would turn out? blurry? maybe i should buy a camera and do some testing.

i made it through the 10 mile long run milestone today with no problems! i feel great and don't even think i'm going to need any post run ibuprofin.

i was little worried in the middle of the week because i had to increase the frequency of a few of the exercises my physical therapist gave me to keep things moving smoothly, but it looks like it was only a temporary regression. i'll keep monitoring my hip joint range of motion closely, but i'm feeling extremely positive about being able to run the flying pig marathon in cincinnati on may 4th.

oh, i discovered a new training tip today - apparently the secret to running ten miles in sub-zero temperatures is downing a half a package of fig newtons before the run.

next week, i'll slap on a few more miles and try 4 miles, 5 miles, 4 miles and 11 miles.

if we're getting serious lake effect snow, which means i can't run on the sidewalk, and you see that i'm running along the edge of the plowed street into oncoming traffic, it's really not funny to swerve at me. really.

on five and ten mile runs you'd be surprised how many people think this is good idea.

i did it. i ran the 8 miler today, capping a week of 3, 5, 3 and 8 miles. the 8 mile run was a little tough because we've been getting more lake effect snow and nobody had shovelled their sidewalks. there was no pain to speak of beyond the normal aches and pains associated with running 8 miles. i took a few preventative ibuprofin after the run, but i think i could have gotten away with not taking any.

next week is going to be a big milestone. i think i'll keep the junk miles the same, and bump the long run up to ten miles. this will be the same mileage that i started seeing serious problems, so it will be a big psychological boost to make it through it and stay healthy.

i'm getting more confident that i might be able to run a marathon this year.

even though the novelty of running in slush and slop is starting to wear a little thin, i finished up the week with a strong 7 mile run. i ended up running 3, 4, 3 and 7 miles.

i'm still cautiously taking it week by week, but things are looking good. except for the usual muscle soreness associated with running 7 miles, i'm remarkably pain free this evening.

next week i think i'll add tackle 3, 5, 3 and 8 miles. i'm getting close to the magic 10 mile number for a long run, which is where i started seeing trouble in the summer. who knows, maybe they'll be a spring marathon in my future. otherwise, i'll be perfectly happy with working my way up to 30 or so miles a week and calling it good.

"I think you devise your own limits for your own personal convenience. There are some people who wish to have limits, and they'll invent as many boxes for themselves as they want. It's like, you know, men invented armor. They wanted to protect themselves from the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune and so forth. And people do the same thing psychically and psychologically. They build their own armor. They build their own rathole, whatever it is. And they choose their existence. Whether they do it consciously or whether it is helped along by a government or an education system, somebody is helping to shape this imaginary box you live in, but it doesn't have to be there."
