day 2156: schooool’s out for summer!

apologies to alice cooper.

day 2153: odin’s last day of school!

sigh. didn’t the school year just start?
and yes, at odin’s school they wear silk capes, walk over a "Rainbow Bridge" laden with silk scarves, and receive felt finger puppets to mark the passing of the school year

me, 38 years ago. born 2.5 months premature before neonatal intensive care.

38 years ago, before the advent of neonatal intensive care, if you were born 2.5 months premature you got plopped in an incubator meant for full grown newborns and people hoped for the best. there wasn’t much to done except , perhaps, pray.
if memory serves scholarly articles were written on how doctors managed [...]

the growing story

one of our favorite books is “the growing story” where a boy learns that he is growing right along with his dog and chickens.
we’re living that story as odin grows right along with his new chicks.
they’re all growing too fast!
while the chicks can still fit in the palm of my hand [...]

seeking advice on preventing peach leaf curl.

last year our peach tree developed a fungal disease known as leaf curl which causes the leaves to become discolored and eventually the characteristically curled in a gnarly manner. infected leaves fall early and typically fruit will drop early too which means no harvest for the year.

day 2140: odin teaches The Way of The Chicken to friends.

freaky lighting from the heat lamp notwithstanding, odin is having a grand time showing off his new chicks to friends.
it’s amazing to watch both the kids and the chicks take to each other.
odin is very aware of the each chick’s temperament and does an amazing job teaching his friends to respect their little [...]

day 2136: scenes from a very active mother’s day.

and attempting to fly kites even when we are all pretty sure there’s not enough wind to keep them aloft.

somewhere along the [...]

day 2136: getting familiar with our new baby chicks.

over the next few weeks we’ll take a little time to get our new baby chicks used to us. odin has been feeding them a lot so they like him best
this is a black australorp.

and this is an ameraucana, known for laying colorful bluish green shelled eggs.

this [...]

day 2135: odin gets some chickens!

we’ve been talking about getting chickens for quite some time, partly for fresh eggs ( although there is certainly no shortage of farm-fresh organic eggs in the area ) and partly to have fun with odin learning about where food comes from – know your farmer, know your food! caring for chickens and [...]

day 2135: odin aced his swimming “finals”!

odin has been continuing his swimming lessons over the winter.
it seems like just yesterday he was getting comfortable with being in the pool and practicing mastering floating on his back with a body board.
but there comes a time to put away childish things. the body boards and floatation devices are no [...]
