“The Internet enables people to connect with strangers
in other parts of the world, getting together around shared
affinities — the whole virtual community story. Ebay adds a
reputation system, and a new market emerges. Peer to peer
methodologies enabled 70 million people to share their hard disk
space via Napster, and 2 million people to amass 20 trillion
floating point operations per second of CPU power to search for
messages from outer space.

What will happen when billions of people carry devices that are
thousands of times more powerful than today’s PCs, linked at speeds
thousands of times faster than today’s broadband connections,
perhaps with distributed reputation systems that enable us to find
people with whom we have some common cause — on the fly, in the
real world?”
